Morocco golf transfers: airport-to-course times and logistics

On the road to a golf course in Morocco

Several Moroccan golf courses publish a short drive from the airport: Samanah says it is 15 minutes from Marrakech airport, the federation places Noria a few minutes from it, and the Fairmont at Taghazout Bay is a 45-minute drive from Agadir’s Al Massira airport. No club publishes a transfer price, so get a written quote before you travel, or agree the fare before any taxi moves. The real planning work is choosing one base per region, because the drives between golf regions are long.

Airport to first tee: the drive times clubs actually publish

Drive times quoted on forums vary wildly, so the table below only lists what a club, its hotel or the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation (FRMG) states on its own page. Where a course gives an address but no time, we give the address and nothing more.

Two things stand out. In Marrakech, several of the courses on our site sit along the Amizmiz, Guemassa, Tahanaout and Ouarzazate roads on the southern side of the city. In Ifrane, by contrast, the published drives from the bigger gateways are measured in hours rather than minutes: Michlifen gives 2 hours 20 from Rabat-Salé airport and 3 hours 50 from Casablanca’s Mohammed V airport.

Taxi, private driver or hotel shuttle

For a golf group with bags, the realistic choices are a pre-booked private transfer, a taxi, or a shuttle run by the club or hotel. Here is how they compare on what can actually be checked.

OptionWhat is publishedWatch out for
Pre-booked private transferNo club publishes a rateAsk for a written quote per vehicle, with bag space for every golf bag
Hotel airport shuttleThe Fairmont at Taghazout Bay arranges airport pick-ups through its conciergeNo price is shown: confirm it when you book the room
Club shuttleGolf de l’Océan, Agadir: free shuttle from 10 hotel stops, 1 Oct 2026 to 30 Apr 2027, on reservation and subject to availabilityBook it with your tee time; first town departure 07:30
Taxi (petit or grand taxi)No official fare grid for golf runsUK advice: agree the fare in advance or check the meter is running
App-booked rideNoneUK advice warns many are unlicensed and may not be insured to carry passengers

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) adds two points worth passing on to anyone in your fourball who wants to save a few dirhams. Petit taxi drivers often pick up other customers during the journey, and drivers of both petits and grands taxis sometimes speed, particularly in big cities. With four golf bags and four trolley cases, a single pre-booked vehicle is simply easier.

In Agadir, the Golf de l’Océan shuttle is the one free transfer we found on an official page. Its stops run from the Golden Gate (Kenzi Europa, Decameron Tafoukt Beach, The View) through the Beach Club, Riu Palace Tikida, Dunes d’Or, Tikida Beach, Tikida Dunas, Iberostar Founty Beach, Sofitel Royal and Sofitel Thalassa to Club Robinson. It serves that club only, so it does not help on the days you play elsewhere.

Rather not haggle at arrivals with four golf bags? We build the trip to measure: courses, tee times, accommodation and transfers.

Driving yourself: what UK and Irish golfers need

A hire car makes sense if you want to mix courses on different sides of a city or drive the coast. The paperwork is not the same as for Spain or Portugal.

  • UK licence holders: the FCDO says you need both the 1968 international driving permit (IDP) and your UK licence in the car. Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 IDP, and you cannot buy an IDP outside the UK, so sort it before you leave.
  • Insurance: the same page says to get a green card from your insurer and carry it as proof of minimum cover in Morocco.
  • Irish licence holders: Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs asks you to bring a full Irish licence and an international driving permit, with adequate insurance.
  • The hire desk: UK advice notes that hire companies often ask for a year of driving experience and a higher minimum age. Irish advice adds: do not hand over your passport as security, keep it in sight if it is photocopied, and read the damage waiver in the contract.
  • Drink-driving: any alcohol found in your system means a fine and possible imprisonment. Plan the 19th hole around a driver who stays dry, or book a transfer back.
  • Night and mountain roads: the FCDO warns that poor lighting makes night driving dangerous, and that secondary and mountain roads can be hazardous in bad weather. That matters for Ifrane and for late arrivals.

Nordic golfers should check their own foreign ministry’s driving guidance before booking a car; we have only verified the UK and Irish rules.

Moving between golf regions

Morocco’s golf is spread across a long coastline and an inland plateau, and the distances between regions are real. The figures below come from clubs and resorts, not from route planners.

LegPublished distance or timeSource
Marrakech to Essaouira170 km, about 2 hours 30 by roadGolf de Mogador
Agadir to Essaouira170 km, about 2 hours 30 by roadGolf de Mogador
Casablanca to Essaouira400 kmGolf de Mogador
Fez to Ifrane (Michlifen)65 km, 1 hourMichlifen resort
Rabat to Ifrane (Michlifen)208 km, 2 hours 30Michlifen resort

In practice that means one base per region. A week in Marrakech can stay in the same hotel and play a different course every day; a two-centre week works best as Marrakech plus Essaouira, or Agadir plus Essaouira, with the 170 km drive on a non-golf morning. If you would rather not drive, coach operator CTM lists Marrakech to Agadir among its most searched routes; check the bag allowance with the operator, because we have not found a published rule for golf bags.

For Golf de Mogador, the club itself points out that Essaouira-Mogador airport is only 16 km from the town, which can turn an Essaouira add-on into a simple stay if a route from your home airport exists that season. For Michlifen, plan on Fès-Saïss rather than Casablanca: 55 minutes against 3 hours 50.

Marrakech, Agadir and the north: how we would plan it

Marrakech

Base yourself between the medina and the southern golf roads. Samanah (Km 14, Amizmiz road), Assoufid (Km 10, Guemassa road), Amelkis (Km 12, Ouarzazate road) and Royal Golf Marrakech (old Ouarzazate road) are all on the south side, Samanah says it is 15 minutes from the airport, and the FRMG places Noria a few minutes from it. Ask your hotel whether it runs its own golf transfers before booking a car.

Agadir and Taghazout Bay

Golf du Soleil sits at Km 7 on the Bensergao road, Golf des Dunes 10 km from the city, and Tazegzout at Km 17 on the Essaouira road, 15 minutes from downtown. If you stay at Taghazout Bay, allow 45 minutes from Al Massira airport, as the Fairmont states. If you stay in the hotel strip, the Golf de l’Océan shuttle covers that course.

Tangier and Tetouan

The Royal Country Club de Tanger is on the Boubana road in the city, Al Houara at Km 19.8 on the Tangier to Asilah road, and Royal Golf de Cabo Negro at Km 1 on the Martil road near Tetouan. These are separate drives, so group your rounds by area rather than by day of the week.

Small things that save time on the day

  • Carry cash for caddies. At Royal Golf Marrakech and Royal Golf de Cabo Negro a forecaddie has been compulsory since 28 May 2025, paid in cash: 200 to 300 MAD for 18 holes, per caddie, depending on how many players are in the group.
  • Check the shuttle return. Golf de l’Océan publishes a timetable for the season; book both directions when you book the tee time.
  • Get the passport stamped. UK advice says some travellers have had trouble leaving Morocco because their passport had no entry stamp. Your UK passport needs an expiry date at least 3 months after arrival; Ireland advises 6 months of validity for Irish passports.
  • Ramadan. The FCDO says the next Ramadan starts in February 2027 and that driving may be erratic around dusk, when people head home. Avoid booking long transfers for that hour.

For how golf bags travel in the hold, see our guide to flying golf clubs to Morocco. If you want the whole thing handled, our golf holidays in Marrakech include transfers in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

No club publishes a price. The cost depends on the vehicle, the time of day and the number of golf bags, so ask your hotel or transfer company for a written quote per vehicle before you travel, and agree any taxi fare before the car moves.

Samanah says it is 15 minutes from the airport, and the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation places Noria a few minutes from it. The Montgomerie is on Avenue Guemassa, which the federation calls the airport road.

UK drivers need the 1968 international driving permit and their UK licence, plus a green card from their insurer, according to the FCDO. Irish drivers are advised to bring a full Irish licence and an international driving permit.

Golf de l’Océan in Agadir runs a free shuttle from 10 hotel stops between 1 October 2026 and 30 April 2027, on reservation and subject to availability. It only serves that course.

Golf de Mogador gives 170 km, about 2 hours 30 by road, the same as from Agadir. The course itself is 3 km from the Essaouira medina.
