Tangier and Cabo Negro golf: 3 courses, sample trip and costs
- 09 October 2026
A golf trip to northern Morocco comes down to three courses: the Royal Country Club de Tanger, founded in 1914 and set inside the city; Al Houara, opened in 2021 overlooking the Atlantic on the Asilah road; and the Royal Golf de Cabo Negro on the Mediterranean side, near Tetouan. Published visitor green fees for 18 holes are 650 MAD, 800 MAD and 750 MAD, so playing all three costs 2,200 MAD a head before caddies and buggies. Four days is enough to fit them in without rushing.
This is not another course profile (those are linked below). It is a planning page: which course suits which golfer, how to order the rounds, and what the golf on a northern trip actually costs, using the official rate sheets we read on 9 October 2026.
The three northern courses at a glance
The three layouts have little in common. Tangier is an old, hilly, tree-lined course; Al Houara is a modern resort course by the ocean; Cabo Negro faces the Mediterranean between dunes, pines and hills.
| Course | Location | Layout | Length | Designer | Opened | Visitor green fee, 18 holes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Country Club de Tanger | Tangier, route de Boubana, 3 km from the centre according to the federation | 18 holes, par 70 | 6,060 m | Modified by Cotton and Pennink, renovated in 2001 by Peter Harradine | 1914 | 650 MAD (undated rate sheet) |
| Al Houara | Km 19.8 on the Tangier–Asilah national road, Atlantic views | 18 holes, par 72, plus a 9-hole par-3 course (par 27) | Not published by the club | Graham Marsh and Vijay Singh | June 2021 | 800 MAD (2026 price list) |
| Royal Golf de Cabo Negro | Km 1 on the Martil road, near Tetouan | 18 holes, par 72 | 6,528 m according to the federation | Cabell B. Robinson (the federation also credits Hawtree & Sons) | Not published | 750 MAD (undated) plus a compulsory forecaddie |
The Royal Country Club de Tanger describes itself as the oldest course in Morocco. Its 6,060 metres wind through cypress, pine, fir and eucalyptus, over ground that switches between a rugged stretch and a flatter one. At par 70, it has the lowest par of the three.
Al Houara Golf Club is part of a resort that includes the Hilton Tangier Al Houara Resort & Spa. The main course, by Graham Marsh and Vijay Singh, is guarded by bunkers and water; next to it, a 9-hole par-3 course gives you a short evening round.
The Royal Golf de Cabo Negro is a Cabell B. Robinson design set among dunes, pine forest and green hills, in the club’s own words. It is the only one of the three whose rate card spells out its forecaddie rule, although a Royal Moroccan Golf Federation circular of 29 May 2025 makes a caddie compulsory on all three.
Which one suits your group
You do not have to play all three. Here is how to choose, based on what the clubs publish.
You want a slice of history
Tangier. The club dates itself to 1914, with a layout modified by two British architects, Cotton and Pennink, and renovated by Peter Harradine in 2001. It also has the cheapest green fee of the three at 650 MAD.
Your fourball has mixed handicaps
Al Houara. The 9-hole par-3 course costs a visitor 250 MAD, and the club hires out a half set for 200 MAD for that course only. Higher handicappers can play it while the others take on the main course. There is also a junior rate of 250 MAD for 18 holes.
You are staying on site and want to cut the bill
Al Houara again: the 2026 price list has a “Hilton Resident” green fee of 600 MAD instead of 800 MAD for 18 holes (350 instead of 450 MAD for 9). If you plan several rounds there, the saving adds up.
You want to see the Mediterranean
Cabo Negro, the only one of the three on the Mediterranean coast. Budget for the forecaddie: compulsory since 28 May 2025 following a note from the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation, and paid in cash directly to the caddie.

What a round really costs, extras included
The green fee is only part of it. All three clubs publish their extras, but differently: at Cabo Negro the caddie is charged per caddie, not per player, and the price depends on the size of your group.
| Item (18 holes) | Tangier | Al Houara | Cabo Negro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visitor green fee | 650 MAD | 800 MAD | 750 MAD |
| 9-hole green fee | 350 MAD | 450 MAD | 450 MAD |
| Buggy | 300 MAD | 300 MAD | 400 MAD |
| Club hire (full set) | 250 MAD | 350 MAD | 400 MAD |
| Caddie | Compulsory (FRMG circular); no club rule or rate published | Compulsory (FRMG circular); no club rule or rate published | Compulsory: 200 MAD (1 or 2 players), 250 MAD (3), 300 MAD (4), cash |
| Trolley | Not published | Not published | 70 MAD |
Members of the Moroccan federation pay less (400 MAD at Tangier, 600 MAD at Al Houara), but that rate is not for a UK, Irish or Nordic handicap card. Plan on the visitor rate.
A worked example for a fourball walking at Cabo Negro: 4 × 750 MAD in green fees plus 300 MAD for the group’s caddie, so 3,300 MAD, or 825 MAD each. As a two-ball, the caddie costs 200 MAD, which is 100 MAD each.
A sample four-day trip
The simplest plan uses Tangier as a base and adds Cabo Negro as a day out or at the end. One thing to know: the Tangier course closes at 3pm on Mondays (Tuesday to Sunday it is open 9am to 6pm).
- Day 1: arrive in Tangier, settle in, range session or the par-3 course at Al Houara if timings allow.
- Day 2: Royal Country Club de Tanger in the morning (avoid Monday afternoons).
- Day 3: Al Houara, 18 holes. Stay at the resort’s Hilton and the resident rate applies.
- Day 4: Royal Golf de Cabo Negro on the Mediterranean, with a forecaddie. Tee time booked ahead and transfer arranged.
Golf cost per person for these three 18-hole rounds, worked out from the published rates for a fourball:
| Option | Tangier | Al Houara | Cabo Negro (caddie shared by 4) | Total per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walking, visitor rate | 650 MAD | 800 MAD | 825 MAD | 2,275 MAD |
| One buggy between two | 800 MAD | 950 MAD | 1,025 MAD | 2,775 MAD |
| Walking, Al Houara Hilton resident | 650 MAD | 600 MAD | 825 MAD | 2,075 MAD |
That is the golf only. Accommodation, transfers and meals come on top; flights are not included and are booked by you. The Tangier and Cabo Negro rate sheets carry no validity dates, so we reconfirm prices when we quote. We do not quote a Tangier to Cabo Negro driving time because we have no official source for it: we set it together with your tee time when we organise the transfer.

When to go
The World Meteorological Organization’s 1991-2020 climate normals have no Tangier station. The closest station to the three courses is Tetouan, next to Cabo Negro, and its averages give a fair picture of the season on this coast.
| Tetouan (WMO 1991-2020) | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Sep | Oct | Nov |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Average daily high | 19.0 °C | 20.7 °C | 23.4 °C | 27.1 °C | 27.6 °C | 24.2 °C | 20.5 °C |
| Days with rain (≥ 1 mm) | 7.4 | 6.8 | 4.4 | 1.0 | 3.1 | 6.8 | 7.7 |
May, June and September combine fewer wet days with average highs of 23 to 28 °C. In July and August the average high at Tetouan is above 30 °C (30.0 and 30.3 °C), so take early tee times. From November to February, expect seven to nine days of rain a month.
Practical points before you book
- Passport: for UK travellers, it must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the date you arrive, and you should get an entry stamp at the border. Irish passports need at least 6 months’ validity on entry, and the passport card is not accepted.
- Clubs: the cheapest full-set hire of the three is at Tangier (250 MAD), the dearest at Cabo Negro (400 MAD).
- Cash: take dirhams for the Cabo Negro caddie, who is paid directly in cash.
- Mondays: the Tangier course is open until 3pm only.
- Caddie etiquette and dress codes: our guide to handicap, dress code and caddies covers the rules course by course.
For the city and its two courses, start with golf in Tangier; for the Mediterranean side, see golf in Cabo Negro.
