Mazagan Golf, El Jadida: fairway, lake and fountain

An El Jadida golf break comes down to two Atlantic courses you can play on consecutive days: Mazagan, a Gary Player links opened in 2009, and Royal Golf El Jadida, a Cabell B. Robinson design from 1993. The town is about an hour’s drive from Casablanca airport, so it is easy to add two or three Casablanca courses to the trip. And because the ocean keeps the coast cool, the coast still works for golf in July and August, when Marrakech averages over 37 °C.

Mazagan and Royal Golf El Jadida: two courses, two styles

The names are easily confused. Mazagan Golf is the course at the Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort, on the Azemmour road. Royal Golf El Jadida is the club at km 7 on the Casablanca road, next to the Pullman Mazagan Royal Golf & Spa hotel. The table sets out what the clubs, the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation and specialist guides publish.

Mazagan: Gary Player's links

Opened in 2009, Mazagan Golf weaves in and out of the low dunes that line the sandy coast. Gary Player gave it genuine links characteristics: the fairways roll naturally, leaving uphill, downhill and sidehill lies, and several holes play towards the sea. At almost 7,500 yards when it opened, it is a long course, so mid-handicappers should pick forward tees, especially when the wind is up. Anyone who has played the links of Ireland or Scotland will feel at home with the ground game.

The resort around it was developed by the Kerzner group, the company behind Atlantis in Dubai, between a eucalyptus forest and El Haouzia beach. For golfers, the appeal is simple: you sleep on the course.

Royal Golf El Jadida: forest golf with an ocean finish

Royal Golf El Jadida opened in 1993 to a Cabell B. Robinson design, later renovated by James H. Duncan, who redesigned the tees, rebuilt the bunkers and moved several greens. The front nine runs through eucalyptus, araucaria and acacia, with holes the operator calls “tempting but deceptive”. The last three holes run along the Atlantic like a links and get tough when the wind blows.

The club is run by Madaëf Golfs, which also operates Casa Green Golf in Casablanca, and is open seven days a week from 7am to 7pm.

Which one first?

With only one day, play Mazagan for the links experience. But the two are different enough to justify a day each: one open and exposed, the other sheltered by forest until the seaside finish. A good order is Royal Golf El Jadida first to settle in, then Mazagan on day two.

Getting there from Casablanca airport

Most visitors fly into Casablanca’s Mohammed V airport. Allow about an hour by road from the airport to Royal Golf El Jadida, according to the Top 100 Golf Courses visit report. The Pullman hotel next to the course gives Casablanca as 90 km away, El Jadida’s old town as 15 minutes by car and the railway station as 6 km.

On the bag question, Royal Air Maroc carries a golf bag of up to 23 kg free of charge, with anything over that charged as standard excess baggage. With other airlines, check sports-equipment fees before you book. Our guide to booking golf in Morocco covers tee times, caddies and buggies once you are there.

Combining El Jadida with Casablanca's courses

Since you land in Casablanca, it makes sense to play there too. Three 18-hole courses sit in the Bouskoura area, a few minutes from the city, and a historic 9-hole course lies inside the Anfa racecourse.

A five-day outline that works well:

  1. Day 1: land in Casablanca, overnight in the city or at Bouskoura.
  2. Day 2: Casa Green Golf Club or The Tony Jacklin Casablanca.
  3. Day 3: second Casablanca course in the morning, drive to El Jadida in the afternoon.
  4. Day 4: Royal Golf El Jadida, then a walk round the Portuguese old town.
  5. Day 5: Mazagan, then back to Casablanca airport.

This keeps the driving down to one main transfer each way. Our Casablanca golf page covers the city’s courses in more detail.

  • May, June and September are the sweet spot: 22 to 26 °C in the afternoon and very few rain days.
  • July and August stay playable all day, with average highs around 26 °C at Casablanca against more than 37 °C in Marrakech. That is this coast’s big advantage for a summer trip.
  • November to March is mild but wetter, with six to seven rain days a month at Casablanca: build a spare day into the plan. For winter sun, our guide on when to play golf in Morocco compares the drier destinations.

What to ask before you book

Neither Mazagan nor Royal Golf El Jadida publishes a green-fee list we could verify at the time of writing. Rates, handicap limits, buggy and caddie availability and any hotel-guest terms all need confirming when you book. That is the legwork we do for you: we build the trip around you, with tee times, hotels and transfers from Casablanca. See how our tailor-made golf holidays work and ask for a quote.

On paperwork: British passports need an expiry date at least 3 months after arrival, according to the UK government, and Irish passports at least 6 months’ validity from entry, according to the Irish DFA, which also says the Passport Card is not accepted.
