Marrakech vs Costa del Sol for golf: rates, rules and weather
- 09 October 2026
Marrakech and the Costa del Sol solve the same problem, a week of golf in the sun while it is cold at home, but they do it with different weather, different rules on the tee and different currencies. Marrakech is warmer and drier from November to March and has a deep choice of courses from one base; the Costa del Sol is milder in summer, prices in euros, and two of the three clubs we checked let visitors in only through a narrow door. Which one suits you depends on when you travel and how you like to play.
Every figure below comes from a club’s own website or from World Meteorological Organization normals, checked on 9 October 2026. Marrakech clubs publish in dirhams (MAD) and Spanish clubs in euros: we do not convert one into the other, so you can compare like with like on your own terms. Where we give a sterling figure, it is converted from euros only, at the European Central Bank rate of 8 October 2026.
What three Costa del Sol clubs actually publish
The coast has famous names, but they do not all open the gate the same way. We looked at three of them on their official sites.
- Real Club Valderrama, at Sotogrande (San Roque, Cádiz), publishes 2026 visitor rates: €600 (about £508) for 18 holes. It is a private members’ club that welcomes visitors, with visitor tee times from 12:00 to 13:00, Monday to Thursday.
- Real Club de Golf Las Brisas in Marbella, a Robert Trent Jones Snr design updated by Kyle Phillips, is a members’ club. Guests may play only in the company of a member, a non-member is limited to eight games a year, and every playing guest needs a current handicap certificate. There is no visitor green fee to quote.
- La Cala Resort at La Cala de Mijas has three championship courses, Campo America, Campo Asia and Campo Europa. It does not show a single-round rack rate on its site, but it does publish dated package rates, which we use in the calendar section below.
The Kyle Phillips name is a useful bridge: in Marrakech he laid out Al Maaden Golf, which publishes a visitor rate, and Akenza. Other signatures you will find around Marrakech include Nicklaus Design at Samanah, Colin Montgomerie at The Montgomerie and Cabell B. Robinson at Amelkis and Fairmont Royal Palm.
The forecaddie is not a Moroccan oddity
Golfers who hear that Marrakech clubs impose caddies often assume it is a local quirk. Valderrama does the same thing. One forecaddie per group is mandatory there, at €70 plus gratuity (about £59 before the tip), paid directly to the forecaddie on the day.
In Marrakech, the Royal Golf Marrakech has made a forecaddie compulsory since 28 May 2025: 200 MAD for one or two players, 250 MAD for three and 300 MAD for four, per caddie for 18 holes, in cash. At Fairmont Royal Palm, at least one caddie per group was required, at 200 MAD in cash (2025-26 rate card; club website offline on 16 October 2026). Assoufid (250 MAD) and Al Maaden (200 MAD) list the caddie as “on request”, and The Montgomerie (150 MAD) and Atlas Golf (120 MAD) publish a caddie rate; a Royal Moroccan Golf Federation circular of 29 May 2025 makes a caddie compulsory on every course in Morocco.
Buggies follow the same logic on both sides of the strait. Valderrama lists a buggy at €70 and an electric trolley at €25. In Marrakech, clubs that publish a buggy price charge 350 to 450 MAD for 18 holes. The full club-by-club detail is in our guide to handicap, dress code and caddies in Morocco.

Two price calendars that do not line up
This is the part that changes the maths for a winter trip. On the Costa del Sol, La Cala prices its 3 Course Pass (one round on each of its three courses within 14 days, shared buggy and VAT included) by period. In Marrakech, Al Maaden publishes a two-season grid. The two calendars peak at different times. The same question for the Canaries: Marrakech vs Tenerife.
| Period | La Cala 3 Course Pass (3 rounds, shared buggy) | Al Maaden, Marrakech (18 holes, visitor) |
|---|---|---|
| December 2026 | €231 (about £196) | 1,350 MAD (high season) |
| 1 January to 14 February 2027 | €255 (about £216) | 1,350 MAD (high season) |
| 15 February to 10 March 2027 | €351 (about £297) | 1,350 MAD (high season) |
| 11 to 21 March and 29 March to 23 May 2027 | €426 (about £361) | 1,350 MAD (high season) |
| 1 June to 31 August 2027 | €255 (about £216) | 840 MAD from 1 July to 4 September; 1,350 MAD in June |
La Cala’s pass covers three rounds; Al Maaden’s figure is one round, without buggy (400 MAD extra). The table is not a price comparison, it is a calendar comparison: at La Cala, December to mid-February and the summer are the cheapest periods, while spring and much of the autumn carry the top rate; at Al Maaden in Marrakech, the whole stretch from 5 September 2026 to 30 June 2027 is high season, and only July to early September 2027 is discounted.
Across Marrakech, the eight clubs that publish a current visitor rate charge 600 to 1,350 MAD for 18 holes: The Tony Jacklin Marrakech 600, Atlas Golf 650, The Montgomerie 700, Amelkis 950, Samanah 1,100, Royal Golf Marrakech 1,200, Assoufid 1,300 and Al Maaden 1,350. Fairmont Royal Palm and PalmGolf Ourika had not yet published their 2026-27 grids on 9 October 2026. Our page on green fees in Morocco keeps the full list.
The weather, month by month
World Meteorological Organization normals for 1991-2020 give a fair picture, using the Málaga airport station for the Costa del Sol and the Marrakech station.
| Month | Málaga: average high | Málaga: days with rain (1 mm+) | Marrakech: average high | Marrakech: days with rain (1 mm+) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 20.4 °C | 5.4 | 23.1 °C | 3.8 |
| December | 18.0 °C | 5.6 | 20.1 °C | 4.1 |
| January | 17.4 °C | 5.4 | 19.1 °C | 3.0 |
| February | 18.1 °C | 4.6 | 20.7 °C | 3.7 |
| March | 19.9 °C | 5.1 | 23.6 °C | 4.7 |
| April | 21.9 °C | 4.4 | 25.7 °C | 2.9 |
| July | 30.9 °C | 0.0 | 37.7 °C | 0.3 |
From November to April, Marrakech runs 1.7 to 3.8 °C warmer in the afternoon, with fewer wet days in each of those six months. Summer reverses the picture: in July, Málaga averages 4.5 days at 35 °C or more, Marrakech 22.9. If your only window is July or August, the Costa del Sol is the cooler choice; our page on golf in Marrakech in summer explains what playing there in the heat involves.
Getting on the tee: access and handicap rules
- Valderrama: visitor times 12:00 to 13:00, Monday to Thursday; no jeans, cargo shorts or flip-flops; non-playing guests may not accompany visitors on the course.
- Las Brisas: members’ guests only, with a handicap certificate.
- Fairmont Royal Palm, Marrakech: a valid licence and a handicap of 28 or better.
- Assoufid Golf Club, Marrakech: maximum handicap 35, certificate required.
Carry your handicap certificate in both destinations. For Morocco, UK travellers need a passport valid for at least three months after arrival, according to the Foreign Office.
Which one, for which golfer
The Costa del Sol makes more sense if you travel in summer, if you want to play a name like Valderrama and are happy with a midday weekday slot, or if you want to pay everything in euros. At La Cala, December, January to mid-February and the summer months carry the lowest pass rates.
Marrakech makes more sense from November to April if warmth and dry days come first, if you like having thirteen courses on our site within reach of one base and playing a different one each day, and if a caddie on the bag feels like part of the holiday rather than an imposition. One thing has no Spanish equivalent: Ramadan, next starting in February 2027 according to the Foreign Office, during which eating, drinking or smoking in public in daytime can cause offence.
If Marrakech fits your dates, our golf holidays in Marrakech are built around your handicaps and the courses you want, with tee times, accommodation and transfers arranged.
