Golf course in Marrakech with the snow-capped Atlas

Amelkis Golf Club is a 27-hole course designed by Cabell B. Robinson, at km 12 on the Ouarzazate road, around ten minutes from the centre of Marrakech according to the club. It is played as three nine-hole loops, Red, Blue and Green, each a par 36: any two of them make an 18-hole par 72.

The club lists visitor, junior (under 18) and Royal Moroccan Golf Federation (FRMG) member rates, each for 18 or 9 holes. On site you will find buggies, trolleys, a driving range and a pro shop, open 8am to 7pm in summer and 8am to 6pm in winter.

Each loop has two par 3s, five par 4s and two par 5s. On all three, stroke index 1 (the hardest hole according to the club’s scorecard) is a par 5.

Opened in 1995 with 18 holes designed by Cabell B. Robinson, Amelkis Golf Club added a third loop in 2009: today you play 27 holes split into three nines, Red, Blue and Green. On a private estate of more than 450 hectares at the foot of the High Atlas, the American-style fairways cross seven lakes and red earth bunkers, with a few doglegs.

The course hosted the Moroccan Open in 2000. A driving range is there for warming up, and the clubhouse with restaurant is open every day. Allow around ten minutes from the centre of Marrakech, via the Ouarzazate road.

Where to stay near Amelkis

The closest hotel we could verify is Amanjena: Aman describes it as Amelkis’s neighbour and offers a golf package with green fees at Amelkis or Royal Golf. Tips for playing Amelkis

  • Pick your tees. From the black tees the slope is 135 to 138 depending on the combination; from the yellows it drops to 119–124. Most mid-handicappers will enjoy the yellows more.
  • Respect the water. Seven lakes are spread over the 27 holes and, says the club, they “can spring nasty surprises”. On the doglegs, aim for the fairway rather than the short cut.
  • Allow for the wind. The FRMG warns that wind, dunes, creeks and bushes make the wide fairways harder than they look.
  • Save energy for the par 5s. The hardest hole on each loop is a par 5 (holes 2, 11 and 15).
  • Warm up on the range. Access is 100 MAD with two buckets; there is also a chipping green and a putting green.
  • Book before you go. Online booking is open to visitors; budget for a caddie, compulsory in Morocco.
