Marrakech long-stay winter golf: weather, memberships and visas

Water hazard on a Marrakech golf course facing the Atlas mountains

A winter of golf in Marrakech comes down to three choices: when to go (November and March are the mildest months, December to February bring cold early mornings), how to pay for your golf (green fees, a book of rounds or an annual membership where a club publishes one) and how long to stay, because British visitors can stay up to 90 days for tourism without a visa. Below are the figures published by the clubs and by government sources, checked on 12 October 2026, to plan a stay of one to three months.

Marrakech weather from November to March

The 1991-2020 climate normals for the Marrakech weather station, published by the World Meteorological Organization, show a dry winter with colder nights than on the Atlantic coast.

What that means on the course:

  • December and January: around 6 to 7 °C at dawn on average. An 8 am tee time means a jumper and a windproof; late-morning starts are more comfortable. Frost is rare: 0.2 days a year on average, all in January.
  • November and March: the most comfortable months, with 10 to 13 days at 25 °C or more.
  • Rain: three to five wet days a month. Over a long stay, they are rest days rather than lost weeks. At Fairmont Royal Palm, buggies are not allowed on the course in the rain.

If milder mornings matter more to you, Agadir is gentler in winter: our guide to wintering in Morocco with a long-stay golf base in Agadir gives the same figures for the coast. What Marrakech offers is choice: the courses around the city are all covered on our Marrakech golf page.

Memberships, books of rounds and season deals: what the clubs publish

Over one to three months, paying a green fee every round is not the only option. Several Marrakech clubs list memberships or multi-round books. The table shows only what appears on the clubs’ official websites on 12 October 2026.

How many rounds before a membership pays for itself?

Divide the membership price by the same club’s visitor green fee.

  • Al Maaden: 15,000 / 1,350 = 11.1. The individual membership beats green fees from your 12th round. For a couple, 24,000 MAD against 2,700 MAD per round for two: ahead from the 9th round together.
  • Amelkis: 14,000 / 950 = 14.7, so from the 15th round. As a couple, 21,000 against 1,900 MAD: from the 12th round together.
  • Atlas Golf: no membership to compare, but the 40-round book cuts the nine-hole price by a third.

Three rounds a week for three months clears those thresholds comfortably. Two caveats: these memberships are annual (you pay for twelve months to use three), and none of the clubs states whether overseas visitors can join. Get written confirmation from the club before you pay.

What a winter of golf costs in green fees

To compare the options, take a 12-week stay with three 18-hole rounds a week: 36 rounds. Totals are calculated from the published rates above, excluding buggies, caddies and transport.

Option (36 rounds of 18 holes)SumTotal
Pay-as-you-play at the cheapest published visitor rate (The Tony Jacklin)36 × 600 MAD21,600 MAD
Pay-as-you-play at Amelkis36 × 950 MAD34,200 MAD
Pay-as-you-play at Al Maaden (high season)36 × 1,350 MAD48,600 MAD
Amelkis individual subscriptionpublished price14,000 MAD
Al Maaden individual membership (one year)published price15,000 MAD

The practical takeaway: if you are happy playing one course most days, a membership at a club close to where you stay costs less than green fees. If you want variety, use the membership as your home club and add visitor rounds elsewhere, such as a day at Royal Golf Marrakech, open since 1927. There, budget for the compulsory forecaddie introduced on 28 May 2025: paid in cash, per caddie rather than per player (200 MAD for one or two players over 18 holes).

Clubs with no long-stay option, such as Assoufid Golf Club (1,300 MAD for 18 holes in 2026-2027), remain easy to play on a green fee. Assoufid also lists a lower rate for residents of Morocco; a long-stay tourist pays the visitor rate.

Staying beyond 90 days: entry rules

A full winter from 1 November to 31 March is 151 days, longer than a visa-free tourist stay. Here is what the UK and Irish foreign ministries publish:

NationalityPassportVisa and length of stay
BritishValid for at least 3 months after the date you arriveNo visa for up to 90 days for tourism; to stay longer, request an extension at a Moroccan police station
IrishAt least 6 months’ validity from the date of entry; the Passport Card is not acceptedNo visa required; the Irish advice gives no maximum length of stay, so check with the Moroccan embassy

One more point from the UK Foreign Office: make sure your passport is stamped when you arrive, as some travellers have had difficulties leaving Morocco without an entry stamp. In practice, either keep the stay to 90 days (mid-November to mid-February, for example) or apply for the extension in good time.

Health cover and travel insurance for a long stay

This is the line most often overlooked on a three-month trip. The UK Foreign Office says public health facilities in Morocco provide limited care, while private clinics operate to a higher standard. It advises adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover medical treatment and repatriation, and to contact your insurer quickly if you are referred to a medical facility. The emergency number for an ambulance is 150.

Before you buy, read the maximum trip length in the policy and make sure it covers your whole stay. Ask the insurer to confirm the dates in writing.

Where to live for one to three months: rental, golf resort or hotel

  • A furnished rental (flat or villa): space, a kitchen, a normal routine. You will want a car, because the courses are on the edge of the city: Assoufid at km 10 on the Guemassa road, Amelkis at km 12 on the Ouarzazate road, PalmGolf Ourika at km 13 on the Ourika road, Samanah at km 14 on the Amizmiz road.
  • A home on a golf estate: some clubs sit within a property development, such as PalmGolf Ourika in Les jardins de l’Atlas. You then mostly play one course, which is exactly where a membership makes sense.
  • A hotel: the simplest option for a first winter or a few weeks. Our guide to Marrakech golf hotels shows which resorts are really on a course.

Planning your season

A routine that lasts: one home club (where you hold a membership or a book of rounds), two or three other courses in rotation and days off. Save Al Maaden Golf or Amelkis Golf Club for the days you want a championship 18, and the nine-hole Atlas Golf for a short round.

One date for the diary: the next Ramadan starts in February 2027, according to the UK Foreign Office, right in the middle of a winter stay. Our guide to golf in Morocco during Ramadan explains what changes.

Frequently asked questions

November and March are the mildest, with average highs of 23.1 and 23.6 °C in the WMO 1991-2020 normals and 10 to 13 days at 25 °C or more. From December to February, afternoons stay around 19 to 21 °C, but early mornings drop to about 6 to 8 °C.

Not beyond 90 days without paperwork. British citizens can visit for up to 90 days for tourism without a visa and must request an extension at a Moroccan police station to stay longer. Irish citizens need no visa, but the Irish advice gives no maximum stay, so check with the Moroccan embassy.

Some publish memberships, mostly annual. Al Maaden lists an individual membership at 15,000 MAD for one year, Amelkis an individual subscription at 14,000 MAD, and Atlas Golf a book of 40 nine-hole green fees at 12,000 MAD. Royal Golf Marrakech, Samanah and PalmGolf Ourika ask you to contact the club for current terms.

Usually, if you mainly play one club. At Al Maaden the individual membership beats green fees from the 12th round; at Amelkis from the 15th. Three rounds a week for three months is about 36 rounds. Get written confirmation that overseas visitors can join.

Yes. The UK Foreign Office advises travel health insurance covering medical treatment and repatriation, noting that public hospitals offer limited care and private clinics a higher standard. Check that your policy covers the full length of the trip before you travel.
