Marrakech vs Tenerife for a winter golf break
- 22 October 2026
For a winter golf break, Tenerife is the warmer and drier of the two, and Ryanair flies there from more UK and Irish airports; Marrakech has far more courses within reach of one base, shorter flights and a city that fills the days off. At Tenerife’s southern airport the average January high is 22.8 °C, against 19.1 °C in Marrakech, and the nights are about 9 °C milder. Marrakech answers with 13 courses on our site, 11 of them 6 to 22 minutes from the airport, against eight courses across the whole of Tenerife.
Every figure below was checked on 22 October 2026: World Meteorological Organization normals (1991-2020), the official rate cards of the clubs, the island’s tourist board and the airline’s own timetables. Tenerife clubs publish in euros and Marrakech clubs in dirhams (MAD). We do not convert dirhams; sterling figures are converted from euros only, at the European Central Bank rate of 22 October 2026.

Winter weather: where Tenerife clearly wins
There is no point pretending otherwise. From November to February, the south of Tenerife is warmer in the afternoon, much warmer at night and drier than Marrakech. The figures come from the WMO 1991-2020 normals for the Tenerife South airport station (64 m above sea level, the side of the island where most courses are) and the Marrakech station.
| Month | Tenerife South: average high | Tenerife South: days with rain | Marrakech: average high | Marrakech: days with rain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 25.4 °C | 1.4 | 23.1 °C | 3.8 |
| December | 23.7 °C | 3.2 | 20.1 °C | 4.1 |
| January | 22.8 °C | 1.6 | 19.1 °C | 3.0 |
| February | 22.9 °C | 1.8 | 20.7 °C | 3.7 |
| March | 23.6 °C | 1.4 | 23.6 °C | 4.7 |
| April | 24.0 °C | 1.0 | 25.7 °C | 2.9 |
The gap is widest at dawn. The average January low is 15.2 °C at Tenerife South and 5.9 °C in Marrakech, so an 8am tee time in Marrakech starts in a jumper. By March the afternoons are level, and in April Marrakech is the warmer of the two.
Tenerife has its own catch: the north. At Los Rodeos, the northern airport station at 632 m, the January average high is 16.3 °C with 7.5 days of rain. Buenavista Golf and the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife are on that side of the island. For winter sun on Tenerife, play the south.
Choosing Marrakech for its courses rather than its January mornings? We build the trip to measure: courses, tee times, accommodation and transfers.
Courses: 13 around one city against 8 across an island
This is where Marrakech pulls ahead. Tenerife’s tourist board counts eight golf courses and two pitch-and-putt courses on the island. Its golf guide lists six courses in the south (Abama, Amarilla, Golf Costa Adeje, Golf del Sur, Golf Las Américas and the nine-hole, par-27 Los Palos) and two in the north (Buenavista Golf and the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife). Golf del Sur has 27 holes, open since 1987, designed by José Gancedo and remodelled by Manuel Piñero in 2005; Golf Costa Adeje adds a nine-hole course, Los Lagos, to its championship 18.
Around Marrakech, our site covers 13 courses: among them Royal Golf Marrakech, opened in 1927, Al Maaden Golf by Kyle Phillips, Assoufid Golf Club, Samanah, Amelkis, Rotana and The Montgomerie, a par-71 design by Colin Montgomerie. A week in Marrakech can mean a different course every day with several still unplayed; in the south of Tenerife, five 18-hole courses and Los Palos cover a five-round week with little to spare. Our Marrakech golf courses compared page puts all 13 in one table.

| Samanah Golf Club | Marrakech | 1,100 MAD | No period shown | Price not shown |

Two details change the bill. In Marrakech you add a caddie on every round: 200 MAD at Royal Golf Marrakech for one or two players (cash, paid to the caddie), 250 MAD at Assoufid, 200 MAD at Al Maaden and 150 MAD at The Montgomerie. In Tenerife, none of the three winter rate cards lists a caddie (Golf del Sur shows one, booked in advance, at €70 from May 2027 only), but a buggy is extra at all three clubs. Golf del Sur’s English rates page still shows €85 with a buggy, with no dates; the dated grid on its Spanish page gives €120 for November to March. Our page on green fees in Morocco covers every Moroccan club.
Flights from the UK and Ireland
From the UK and Ireland, Tenerife wins on choice. Ryanair’s January 2027 timetables show flights to Tenerife South from 17 UK and Irish airports, including Cork, Shannon, Knock, Bristol, Glasgow Prestwick and East Midlands. Marrakech has five in the same month: Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Dublin. Marrakech wins on time in the air, by roughly 45 minutes to an hour. From France and Belgium the picture reverses: Ryanair flies to Marrakech every day in January 2027 from Paris-Beauvais, Brussels-Charleroi, Marseille and Toulouse, while Charleroi is its only regular route to Tenerife South (36 flights in the month).
| From (Ryanair, January 2027) | To Tenerife South | To Marrakech |
|---|---|---|
| London Stansted | 56 flights, 4 h 30 | 64 flights, 3 h 35 |
| Manchester | 41 flights, 4 h 30 | 36 flights, 3 h 40 |
| Dublin | 55 flights, 4 h 20 | 23 flights, 3 h 35 |
| Edinburgh | 30 flights, 4 h 50 | 9 flights, 4 h 05 |
| Birmingham | 20 flights, 4 h 25 | 9 flights, 3 h 40 |
Flight times are scheduled times; in January both destinations keep the same clock as London and Dublin. Flights are not part of any stay we arrange: you book your own. Departure times, and how to bring your clubs, are in our guides to a golf trip to Marrakech by direct flight and flying with golf clubs to Morocco.
From the airport to the first tee
Both destinations are quick. By road, without traffic (OSRM routing from the terminal, 22 October 2026):
- Tenerife South: Golf del Sur 12 minutes, Golf Las Américas 15, Amarilla 16, Golf Costa Adeje 23, Abama 29. The northern courses are further: Real Club de Golf de Tenerife 51 minutes, Buenavista 61.
- Marrakech-Menara: Atlas Golf (nine holes) 6 minutes, The Montgomerie 8, The Tony Jacklin Marrakech 13, Assoufid and Noria 14, Fairmont Royal Palm 15, Royal Golf Marrakech and Amelkis 16, Samanah 20, Al Maaden and Rotana 22.
On a morning arrival, a round on the first afternoon is realistic in both places.
What a golf week costs
For five rounds in winter, the Tenerife clubs sell vouchers: 5 green fees for €615 (about £515) at Golf Costa Adeje, €714 (about £598) at Golf Las Américas. Golf del Sur’s 5 green fee voucher costs €525 (about £440) from November to March.
In Marrakech, five different courses at the rates above (The Montgomerie, Samanah, Royal Golf Marrakech, Assoufid and Al Maaden) add up to 5,650 MAD in green fees, plus a caddie each round. The detail by budget is in our cost of a golf week in Morocco guide.
Our own golf holidays in Marrakech start from €1,150 per golfer (about £963): a private villa for 3 to 21 people, a dedicated chef, private transfers between the airport, the villa and the courses, and rounds on Marrakech’s courses chosen with you.
Rules and paperwork
- Handicap: Golf Las Américas sets a maximum of 28 for men and 36 for women; Golf del Sur asks for a valid licence or handicap certificate. In Marrakech, Assoufid caps handicaps at 35 and asks for the certificate at reception. Our guide to handicap, dress code and caddies lists the Moroccan rules.
- Caddies: compulsory on every Moroccan course since a Royal Moroccan Golf Federation circular of 29 May 2025.
- Passports: for Spain, a UK passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. For Morocco, it must be valid for at least 3 months after arrival; Irish passports need 6 months. French and Belgian travellers can enter Spain with an ID card but need a passport for Morocco.
- Ramadan: next starting in February 2027, according to the Foreign Office. Golf goes on, but eating, drinking or smoking in public in daytime can cause offence. Tenerife has no equivalent.
Which one, for which golfer
Tenerife makes more sense if warmth from dawn to dusk comes first, if you fly from a regional airport such as Cork, Bristol or Glasgow Prestwick, if you want to pay in euros and if you are happy repeating a course or two in a week.
Marrakech makes more sense if the golf itself is the point: 13 courses, a different one every day, short transfers and a shorter flight from London, Manchester or Dublin. Days off go on the medina, Jemaa el-Fna and the Atlas, which several courses look out on. Bring a jumper for early tee times from December to February. Our winter golf in Morocco guide sets out where to play month by month.
Send us your dates and handicaps, and we will suggest the Marrakech courses to match. We build the trip to measure: courses, tee times, accommodation and transfers.
