When to go depends on the region. The south (Marrakech, Agadir) plays best from October to April: in December and January average highs are 19–20 °C in Marrakech and 21–22 °C in Agadir, and March–April (24–26 °C in Marrakech) is the best window of the year. In July and August Marrakech nears 38 °C: tee off at dawn, or head for the coast (Essaouira, 21–22 °C) or for altitude (Ifrane, 1,650 m). In the north, Rabat and Casablanca see six to eight rainy days a month from November to February (WMO 1991–2020 normals). Marrakech, with 13 courses, is the one base where you can play a different course every day.

Two seasons, not one

Unlike most of northern Europe, where golf stops for the winter, Morocco is playable almost all year round, with more than 300 days of sunshine. The year splits into two broad periods: a high season of near-perfect playing conditions, and a low season with advantages of its own, most of them financial.

High season, October to April: the best conditions

Running roughly from October to April, this is the window every specialist guide and tour operator recommends. Temperatures sit between 15 and 28 °C depending on the region, skies are mostly clear and rain is rare. Courses are at their best and you can play a full day without the heat getting in the way.

  • Autumn (October–November) and spring (March–April) are the peak of the peak. The countryside is green, the days are long and sunny and the evenings stay mild. This is the window for golfers who care most about course condition and setting.
  • Winter (December to February) belongs to the high season too, above all on the southern courses around Marrakech and Agadir. Daytime temperatures are mild and ideal for golf, though the nights can be cold. When Europe is shivering, this is the sunlit alternative.

Naturally, that quality has a price. Courses are busier, tee times at the prestigious clubs need booking well ahead, and both hotel rates and green fees are at their annual maximum — our green fees guide gives the figures city by city.

Low season, June to September: heat, quiet fairways and real bargains

June to September is the Moroccan summer. Temperatures climb and can exceed 35 °C inland, in Marrakech or Fez. That sounds like a deal-breaker, but it opens up a different kind of golf trip for those willing to adapt.

The trick is to keep local hours: tee off very early, while the night’s cool is still in the air, or late in the afternoon. The courses are far quieter, and a round flows without waiting on any tee. It is also when the best offers on packages and green fees appear, so a luxury week costs a good deal less than it would in March. On the Atlantic coast — Essaouira, Agadir or Rabat — the ocean takes the edge off the heat and golf is perfectly pleasant even in the middle of summer.

One country, several climates: a region-by-region guide

Moroccan weather is not uniform. From the Atlantic shore to the edge of the desert, each region has its own microclimate, and it shapes the golf directly.

Marrakech and the interior: mild winters, fierce summers

The golfing capital of the country has a continental climate. From October to April it is a golfer’s paradise: sunny days, with average highs from 19–20 °C in December–January to 24–26 °C in March–April, and cool nights. This is when the Red City lives to the rhythm of golf, and when the thirteen courses on our Marrakech pages are all at their best. In summer (June to August) the heat is intense and dry. You can still play by keeping your rounds to the early morning, and it is the moment to enjoy first-rank hotels and courses at very attractive rates.

The Atlantic coast: ocean-cooled

Agadir, Essaouira, Rabat and Casablanca enjoy a far more temperate oceanic climate. Summers are mild and breezy, a long way from the inland heat, which makes the coast the obvious summer destination. Winters are mild but at times damp and windy, especially in Essaouira, whose trade winds add a technical challenge of their own to the round. Agadir, particularly sheltered, probably has the most stable and sunny climate in the country all year round — which is why its four courses are so often the winter choice.

The Mediterranean north: spring and autumn

Tangier and Saïdia sit under a Mediterranean influence. The most agreeable golfing seasons here are spring and autumn, with ideal temperatures. Summers are hot and dry, and winters can be quite cool and wet.

Choosing your window: beyond the weather

The forecast is only one of the criteria. To decide properly, weigh up these other factors.

  • Your budget. The differences can be substantial. Spring and autumn, the heart of the high season, are the most expensive. Summer, and the weeks outside the school holidays, offer much better value, with significant reductions on accommodation and sometimes on green fees. Our week-by-week costing puts numbers on it.
  • How much life you want around you. If you enjoy the buzz of busy courses, tournaments and resort activity, aim for spring and autumn, the heart of the high season. If you prefer quiet, open fairways and more personal service, June, July (mornings only), December outside the festive weeks and January will suit you perfectly.
  • The kind of trip you have in mind. Golf plus time by the pool? Summer on the coast (Agadir) or spring anywhere both work well. Golf plus culture — medinas, excursions? Spring and autumn, with their moderate temperatures, are ideal for combining sport and sightseeing.

Getting ready: the details that make the trip

Once the dates are chosen, good preparation is what makes a trip run smoothly.

  • Book your courses ahead. This is essential in high season, above all at the best-known clubs such as Assoufid, Royal Golf Marrakech or Mogador Golf Academy in Essaouira. In low season, booking is still advisable if you want your preferred tee times. Our booking guide covers caddies, handicaps and the other practicalities.
  • Pack in layers. Even in winter, a cool morning — especially in Marrakech — turns into a very mild afternoon. On the coast a windproof is essential whatever the season. In summer, go for light technical clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and a high-factor sunscreen.
  • Make use of tailored services. A two-centre trip — Marrakech for serious golf, Essaouira for a few days by the sea, for instance — can get much more out of the week. It is also the right moment to consider a lesson or two with the local professionals, of whom Moroccan clubs have plenty.

The best time is the one that suits you

So when is the best time for a golf trip to Morocco? The answer is not a particular month but a match between the calendar and your priorities. If perfect weather and a lively atmosphere matter most, March, April, May, October and November are your months. If you want quiet courses and the best value, try winter (January–February) for its surprising mildness, or summer, provided you play early and favour the Atlantic coast.

Whichever season you choose, Morocco will meet you with generous sunshine and courses laid out by some of the great architects in landscapes that stop you on the tee. All that remains is to decide what you want from the trip. If you are still weighing Marrakech against your usual destination, our Marrakech or the Algarve guide sets out what actually changes.
